The 5 most common mistakes made during Fire Caning scene

Fire caning can be fun and exhilarating. I think that it's great for shows and performances because it adds an element of danger to the performance but I wouldn't use it in my day-to-day play.

The main reason for not using this as an everyday type of play is because it's a little more dangerous than traditional fire play.  This elevated level of danger results from having a significant increase in lit surface area which needs to be controlled.

Some of the common mistakes are:

1) Person lites the cane and forgets that there is lacquer on it and the lacquer liquefies or turns hot and sticky and can cause burns and/or can irritate the skin.

2)  Sometimes, a person doing fire caning may treat the cane as if it were not lit with fire, and may place the cane against the top of the thighs and burn the lower buttocks.

3)  When there is more lit surface area, it becomes more difficult to extinguish the fire that transfers to the skin.

4) Because it's a combustible material, it will smoke and eventually burn, which means that the person performing the fire caning will be smacking someone with something much hotter than with that which they began.

5)  Lastly - most strikes can either fan the flames which can light other areas of unlit fuel, or in case too much fuel is used, it can splatter to other places.

In addition to all of the above, a person performing fire caning does not really get all the benefits out of the cane either. For me its a great show stopper, but if you are not performing in front of an audience... It's an expensive risk.
