When can a person consider themselves a Dominant?
Q: Can you consider yourself a Dominant if you have never had a sub and (or) never really have had a desire to have one? Yet you like to scene with bottoms / sub's constantly.....
A: I'm just going to throw this out here. My personal opinion is that there is a progression or growth that we don't really observe as Dominants / Masters. I believe that we all start off as tops simply because, at the beginning of our journeys, we don't know anything other than our own desires. So we get our kicks in, here and there, but we are just getting a feel for the whole thing. Then when we decide that this is what we want and what we are into, we begin the process of learning the tools, developing the skills, and learning about the lifestyle. I would call this the stage at which a person becomes a Dominant. A person evolves into the latter stages of dominance when he has already developed the physical skills, and requires more than just sex and play... At this stage, the Dominant develops a genuine need to be responsible for another person. I feel that this is the moment at which a Dominant begins pursing his Mastery.
With this hypothesis in mind, it is totally possible that a person may have become a Dominant but may not be ready for the challenges associated with Mastery. Also I would commend a person for knowing his limits. There are many would-be Dominants and Masters who would just take someone under their tutelage, knowing not only that he did not have the skill nor the desire to be responsible for the training of a sub, but also knowing that he would not take responsibility for the potential havoc wreaked in the sub's life. Just an opinion...
