Q: What do people mean when they say that they are 24/7?

A: There are all kinds of references to "24/7" in the BDSM, SM, Kink, and Leather lifestyle, but for the most part, people are usually referring to one of two definitions of "24/7". 

The first of these definitions refers to people who are "out of the closet" and are unashamed of being in the lifestyle.  These are people who are active lifestylers, both in and out of the community. 

The other most widely used definition of "24/7" denotes a type of SM relationship that involves a "live-in" 24/7 D/s relationship.   One of the reasons why people distinguish them selves as being involved in a 24/7 relationship is that being a full time D/type and s/type involves completely different issues compared with non "live-in" relationships.  As a result, the different types of D/s living situations have their own groups and organizations within the lifestyle, so that they can each find and attract the type of people who are looking for that same type of dynamic.  

One thing that I often see is that some Dominants use the "24/7" label with the "live-in" definition as if it makes their relationships better than those relationships that are not live-in. But being in a :live-in dynamic is just different from being in a non-live-in dymanic.  Personally, I do better in live-in relationships then I do in non-live-in situations.  That's just my preference - just as people that live alone or have part-time D/s dynamics are the preference for many.
