Its the Subtle Differences that Count. (Why Vs While)

The Old Dom asked the sub kneeling before him a simple question. “Why are you here?” The sub replied, ”To serve you, Sire.” The Old Dom leaned forward slowly and, as if speaking to a child, said, “That is what you do while you are here but that is not why are you here?” The young sub said, “I don’t understand, Sire.” The Old Dom explained, “There is a difference between what you do while you are here and the reason why you are here,” continuing, “A man signs up to serve in the military and WHILE he is there he marches, runs, jumps and does everything that he is asked—but that’s not WHY he signed up.. The concept of WHY is very similar to the concept of WHILE, but the WHY is so much more important. Just like the man in military, you have duties that you perform WHILE you are here. For example, you clean, cook, wash clothes, satisfy my needs, etc. These are outward demonstrations of your dedication and obedience…but they are not WHY you are here. In both cases—military and personal—it is the WHY that is more important than the service because the WHY gives your life meaning and gives your actions a purpose. So I ask you again, why are you here?” The sub thought for a second and then said, “I don’t know.” The Old Dom answered, “Then I will have to let you go.” “But why?” the sub shouted. “Exactly,” the Old Dom responded. “It’s the WHY that is the rational reason, the frame of mind and the motivation for the action. So if you don’t know why you are here, then how can I motivate and inspire you to continue later on when you are tired and questioning WHY you are here?”
